چکیده

Since the 1970s, artificial reef (AR) deployment has been one of common approaches to augment local production coastal fish in Malaysia. However, there is a lack strategy assess and evaluate success pre-deployed AR. Realizing need for an effective qualitative quantitative monitoring evaluation AR, this study proposes side-scan sonar coupled with scuba diving observation enhanced Bioceramic Korean (BK) AR along coast Terengganu, Peninsular This method employs integrated data acquisition system detection precise location BK which were deployed at Tukun Telaga Batin off Terengganu coastline 2003 by Fisheries Development Authority Malaysia (FDAM). Following determination exact three areas, team was sent survey physical conditions feasibility as habitat marine life. The scan images compared captured photographs videos acquired during session comprehensive value-added assessment. collected from also processed measure diversity, biomass, identify community surrounding Based on results, remained extremely good condition, physically intact, without significant breakage or damage, no major subsidence into sediment after 19 years deployment. A total 108 modules detected large groups using mosaicked images. cross-examination validate measurements AR’s shadows seafloor, height consistently ranged 1.7 m 1.8 m. In addition, 34 species 14 families 26 genera identified, most classified reef-associated (RA) biomass value 1173.31 ± 1136.69 kg m?3, indicating successfulness fish-aggregating devices (FADs). growth hard corals top bioceramic plate module further supported diversified life conclusion, demonstrates technique recommended be utilized determine pre-deployment

Side-scan Sonar Techniques for the Characterization of Physical Properties of Artificial Benthic Habitats*

Side-scan sonar observations conducted at Mito artificial habitat site in the southwest coast off Taiwan, documented the locations of both concrete cubic blocks (more than 10,000 units) and scrapped steel boats (39 units) deployed previously. Based on their geographic locations, the concrete cubic artificial reefs could be grouped into 14 reef sets. About 30% of the reefs were deployed out of t...

A new species of Larimichthys from Terengganu, east coast of Peninsular Malaysia (Perciformes: Sciaenidae).

A new species of Larimichthys from Terengganu, east coast of Peninsular Malaysia is described from specimens collected from the fish landing port at Pulau Kambing, Kuala Terengganu. Larimichthys terengganui can be readily distinguished from other species of the genus by having an equally short pair of ventral limbs at the end of the gas bladder appendages, which do not extend lateral-ventrally ...

Side-scan Sonar for Inspecting Coastal Structures

INTRODUCTION: SSS has been used to map the sea bottom and search for submerged objects since the 1960's (Fleming, 1976). Recent experiments by CERC and the Buffalo District have shown SSS to be useful for inspecting both sloping coastal structures (i.e., rubble-mound jetties and breakwaters) and vertical-wall structures (i.e., concrete caissons and timber cribs). SSS is an adaptation of high-fr...

Automatic Rectification of Side-scan Sonar Images

The authors present a novel procedure for the automated rectification of side-scan sonar images. The traditional assumption of a flat seabed for the computation of the ground projection from the slant-range sonar data can later result in difficult geo-referencing and registration problems. Accurate rectification using actual seabed topography is required for precise integration of side-scan ima...
